A COWBOY TUNE Not long ago, he thought he understood Why the world would sometimes be unkind He did everything they said he should But, who could’ve known what he would find A cowboy’s life was all that he would need Blue sky and an endless highway Things, he heard would always set him free Now, they’re thoughts that he just isn’t buying And he’ll sing a cowboy tune Laugh at jokes a little soon, tease the ladies Yes, he’ll greet the with a smile And then talk a little while, forget their faces And he tells you, “there’s nothing that he can’t do” He just keeps on singing his cowboy tune He’ll think of a love that he once had Or, of ladies he’s met in smokey bar rooms No, things hadn’t turned out like he planned Those plans, they seem to fade a little too soon And he’ll sing a cowboy tune Laugh at jokes a little soon, tease the ladies Yes, he’ll greet the with a smile And then talk a little while, forget their faces And he tells you, “there’s nothing that he can’t do” He just keeps on singing his cowboy tune At night, alone, he’ll lay awake for hours Just wishing there was someone by his side He knows a cowboy’s life is no bed of flowers But, why should cowboys hurt so much inside? And he’ll sing a cowboy tune Laugh at jokes a little soon, tease the ladies Yes, he’ll greet the with a smile And then talk a little while, forget their faces And he tells you, “there’s nothing that he can’t do” He just keeps on singing his cowboy tune words and music by Johnny Stephen Zawacki written November 12, 1979 - Ann Arbor, Michigan © 1980 Johnny Stephen Zawacki © 2001 Piano Street Music (BMI)

SITTIN' ON THE TRAIN I grab my coat and hat and I'm ready to go I try to beat the clock, but my feet are too slow The morning's way too young for a geezer like me Am I a little old to be dreaming? I tell you, "no, no, no, no, no" Instead of sittin' on the train and goin' down Sittin' on the train and goin' down And hoping this time it takes me somewhere far from this town I'm looking out the window and it's kind of funny That my interest isn't in what I'm pretending to see I'm really sizing up the situation in here Those reflections seem aware of what I'm thinking Oh, we're all sittin' on the train and goin' down Sittin' on the train and goin' down And hoping this time it takes me somewhere far from this town This trip is nothing new, yeah I've been here before I'll be here once again and I'll be wishing for more I never cared for this life that I live And so, I wonder why, I wonder why, why, why Should I be sittin' on the train and goin' down Sittin' on the train and goin' down And hoping this time it takes me somewhere far from this town And hoping this time it takes me somewhere far from this town Hoping this time it takes me somewhere far from this town words and music by Johnny Stephen Zawacki © 1980 Johnny Stephen Zawacki © 2021 Piano Street Music, BMI

Evening Song 03:21
EVENING SONG Evening song sings a melody Evening song brings back melodies Of lighter times and brighter days When our hearts were young, still at play Everything seemed so simple then All of my friends have come and gone All of my dreams have rolled along I knew those friends would fade away But, those dreams are still here today Wondering what's to be, again Tonight, you'll be my evening girl To me, you'll be my special world I guess I've always played the fool But, now's a chance for something new And I'll sing my evening song to you Yes, I'll sing my evening song to you Ooo, evening song Ooo. evening song Evening song words by Terry Kirby and Johnny Stephen Zawacki music by Johnny Stephen Zawacki written 27 January 1980 - Owosso, Michigan © 1981 Johnny Stephen Zawacki and Terry Kirby © 2021 Piano Street Music, BMI

YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN Just a lad oh, he's got more than he can handle Wishes he hadn't gone so far Mama warned him, but if trouble should be born in him She'd bring him back from harm He's on his own, he can't go home He's on his own, he can't go Her family ties, they feel too tight Wonders could they have gone too far Her mama sighs, now she's crying inside She's broken free of daddy's arms She's on her own, she can't go home She's on her own, she can't go You're on your own, you can't go home You're on your own, you can't go words and music by Johnny Stephen Zawacki written 18 February 1982 - Ann Arbor, Michigan © 1982 Johnny Stephen Zawacki © 2000 Piano Street Music, BMI

SOUTHERN SEAS Return me to the southern seas In warmer breezes, there'll I'll find A smiling face and gentle ways It's only you I recognize She sings a song of paradise (take the time to hear) Though her love is far away (but, soon she can be near) She's waiting for his return to her someday She said, "come with me to the southern seas It's not far, you're almost there The wind's in change, you can rearrange Your sails and they will bring you here" She sings a song of paradise (take the time to hear) Though her love is far away (but, soon she can be near) She's waiting for his return to her someday And together we'll sail away - together we'll sail away Together we'll sail away And together we'll sail away - together we'll sail away Together we'll sail away Now, we're sailing free on the southern seas From wind and sea we take our cues No need for chance, our circumstance Depends upon the course we choose And together we'll sail away - together we'll sail away Together we'll sail away And together we'll sail away - together we'll sail away Together we'll sail away words and music by Johnny Stephen Zawacki © 1982 Johnny Stephen Zawacki © 2000 Piano Street Music, BMI

Crazy Fool 03:00
CRAZY FOOL It's something I've wanted to tell you for such a long time But, every time I make an attempt to, I'm wondering why (wondering why) I go and let you treat me this way (why'd ya do it?) I go and smile as though it's okay (why'd ya do it?) (Ooo, why'd ya do it? Ah-ooo) I just can't say Every night I sleep, I'm a dreamer, with you on my mind With every dream I seem to be nearer to what I should find (what I should find) But then, I'm up before the day breaks (why'd ya do it?) I have a cup to start my mistakes (why'd ya do it?) Ooo, why'd ya do it? Ah-ooo) I just can't say Ooo- a crazy fool (why'd ya do it? Ooo, why'd ya do it?) To think that I could ever (ever) make it with you Ooo, it's nothing new (why'd ya do it? Ooo, why'd ya do it?) Just a game I should've never (ever) fallen into (Ooo, why'd ya do it? Ooo, why'd ya do it" Ah-ooo) (Ooo, why'd ya do it? Ooo, why'd ya do it" Ah-ooo) It's something I've wanted to tell you for such a long time But, every time I make an attempt to, I'm wondering why (wondering why) I go and let you treat me this way (why'd ya do it?) I go and smile as though it's okay (why'd ya do it?) (Ooo, why'd ya do it? Ah-ooo) I just can't say Ooo- a crazy fool (why'd ya do it? Ooo, why'd ya do it?) NOTHING BUT LAUGHTER I swear that it's always been my fate, no matter how hard I try That every time I lay t on the line I get myself into a bind My friends will try to rescue me, from what I'm about to say But, there's no hope of protection When there's nothing but laughter coming my way Nothing but laughter coming my way Nothing but laughter coming my way Well, I may be too fast for Wyatt Earp But, I'm too slow to ever be safe From all of that laughter coming my way Well, I'm always attracted to a pretty face, I don't seem to know just why And when I try to get that one step ahead, I end up one behind I'll forget my lines and I'll hesitate, then a moment becomes a day And though I may try to cover it up Still, there's nothing but laughter coming my way Nothing but laughter coming my way Nothing but laughter coming my way Well, I may be too fast for Wyatt Earp But, I'm too slow to ever be safe From all of that laughter coming my way Nothing but laughter coming my way Nothing but laughter coming my way Well, I may be too fast for Wyatt Earp But, I'm too slow to ever be safe From all of that laughter coming my way An I'll try to get to work every single day, on that you can depend But, there're ties I'm out that night before, when I wished I hadn't been My boss he's right there waiting when I arrive a half day late Oh, he'll join right in the chorus of nothing but laughter coming my way Nothing but laughter coming my way Nothing but laughter coming my way Well, I may be too fast for Wyatt Earp But, I'm too slow to ever be safe From all of that laughter coming my way Yeah, all of that laughter coming my way Oh, all of that laughter coming my way words and music by Johnny Stephen Zawacki written 8 January 1980 - Ann Arbor, Michigan © 1980 Johnny Stephen Zawacki © 2021 Piano Street Music, BMI

CAN’T HELP WHAT I FEEL I came into town for a one night stand Was I to know she was out to land her man, tonight? Well, I was caught unaware While trying to be debonaire and trite She bought me a drink and we talked until two Already it was much too late to review those rules of mine Now, I just hope that it’s real ‘Cause I can’t help what I feel tonight I used to be a loner, in but around Hanging out in honky-tonks and playing rebounds But, now those days are over, I’ve taken her cue What else could I do? Now I’m content to kick my shoes off Oh, the feeling is right There’ll be no more running while my baby’s in sight I guess I’ll have to reveal That I can’t help what I feel, well all right Instrument Break (equal to verse) I used to be a loner, in but around Hanging out in honky-tonks and playing rebounds But, now those days are over, I’ve taken her cue What else could I do? You’d be content to kick your shoes off If the feeling is right There’ll be no more running while your baby’s in sight I guess I’ll have to reveal That you can’t help what you feel No way to conceal what you’re beginning to feel Have to reveal that you can’t help what you feel, tonight words and music by Johnny Stephen Zawacki written May 6, 1980 - Ann Arbor, Michigan © 1980 Johnny Stephen Zawacki © 2001 Piano Street Music (BMI)

A LITTLE CONFUSED I’ll start my day and get the feeling that things’ll go smoothly All my worries and cares are nowhere to be found Everything that I see, even jokes played on me seem amusing I carry my load with my feet off the ground But, then I fall out of bed, a cloud looms overhead and I’m crying A tears on my face and I feel so disgraced and abused Everyone that I see, they seem to think that I’m lying Sometimes I have to admit it, I get a little confused I remember a time when that girl of mine let me miss her I was waiting at home, just for her to return Out on her own, I should’ve known she was no beginner Like a fool I would say, “I’ve got nothing to learn” But, then I fall out of bed, a cloud looms overhead and I’m crying A tears on my face and I feel so disgraced and abused Everyone that I see, they seem to think that I’m lying Sometimes I have to admit it, I get a little confused Instrument Break (equal to verse) But, then I fall out of bed, a cloud looms overhead and I’m crying A tears on my face and I feel so disgraced and abused Everyone that I see, they seem to think that I’m lying Sometimes I have to admit it, I get a little confused I’ll be walking along, just whistling a song in the evening The light of the moon, it tells me, I’m the only one there Sometimes being alone, to me, is a very good feeling Taking my time and going nowhere But, then I fall out of bed, a cloud looms overhead and I’m crying A tears on my face and I feel so disgraced and abused Everyone that I see, they seem to think that I’m lying Sometimes I have to admit it, I get a little confused (x3) words and music by Johnny Stephen Zawacki written October 14, 1979 - Ann Arbor, Michigan © 1980 Johnny Stephen Zawacki © 2003 Piano Street Music (BMI)

COULD IT BE I'M IN LOVE WITH YOU? Could it be a sign that I have found this time? Could it being blue has led me here to you" Now, who's to say? But, when you came my way It felt so true, could it be that I'm in love with you? Maybe it's okay if you should come my way Maybe it's all right if you could stay tonight Well, it may be that you just don't love me I'll wait for you, could it be I'm in love with you? Babe, how can I prove my love? I'm trying everyday Stay and I can be your love Don't ever throw love away, away Don't throw it away Don't throw it away Babe, how can I prove my love? I'm trying everyday Stay and I can be your love Don't ever throw love away, away Don't throw it away Don't throw it away words by Johnny Stephen Zawacki, Ron Patterson and Thomas E. YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO My baby got up, and I don'tknow why She left me here with just one reply Well het, you - hey, what 'cha gonna do? I ain't waiting for you, now what you gonna do? DEPENDING ON YOU How can a man live as he please And still escape his memories? I don’t know darling, I’m depending on you Who should blame when things go wrong? Who should he love when his lover’s gone? I don’t know darling, but I’m depending on you When those times just get too hard When I slip and I lose my guard I look for you baby, hey I’m depending on you They could say I’m weak, but who really cares? We all need some help, don’t kid yourself there No, nothing’s so different for you my friend You wonder where help’s at Well, that all depends on you Now, every time that you lose control When Mr. Sun, he starts setting low Just look for your baby She’s there depending on you Hey yeah, just look for your baby It’s all depending on you words and music by Johnny Stephen Zawacki © 1998 Piano Street Music (BMI)

about

These songs are culled from four recording session, between February 1981 and October 1982. Johnny Z was interested in bringing the band into the studio and experiment in a professional recording environment. That did occur and the Uptown digital and compact disc album was the result.

27 songs were recorded to open reel 1/4" analog tape, by Ollie, in essentially a live studio setting, with no overdubs. The 17 songs presented here are very much as they wold have been heard at the many live appearances by the band. The 10 songs which are not included consist of cover tunes, for which the rights had not been secure, as well as alternative takes.

Of the songs contained in CODA, five have never been published before in any form. One is the earliest version, which has Tom taking the lead vocal. All have never been included anywhere.
